What is the Best Lawn Care Routine?

When it comes to maintaining a thriving lawn in Atlanta, a thoughtful and consistent lawn care routine is essential. With Georgia's warm climate, your lawn needs special care to stay healthy and lush year-round. Whether you’re a homeowner with a green thumb, or a lawn care newbie, following the right steps will give you a lawn you can be proud of.

We have prepared a breakdown of the best lawn care routine, tailored to ensure your grass thrives throughout every season:

1. Mow Regularly

Mowing your grass is a fundamental part of your lawn care routine. It’s important to cut at the right height and frequency. In Georgia, the most common grass types are Bermuda, Zoysia and Fescue. Here are some instructions for each:

- Bermuda and Zoysia: These are warm-season grasses that thrive in the heat. Mow them to a height of about 1 to 2 inches and mow every 7–14 days.

- Fescue: Fescue is a cool-season grass, which makes it ideal for the cooler months. Mow them to a height of about 2 to 4 inches and mow every 7–14 days.

Be careful not to cut more than one-third of the grass height at a time. This avoids stressing the grass.

2. Water Deeply

During the hot summer months, Atlanta can have dry spells. Instead of excessive surface waterings, water deeply to ensure the water reaches the root zone (4–6 inches deep). Try to water 2–3 times a week, either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid evaporation loss.

3. Fertilize Timely

Fertilizing gives your lawn the essential nutrients it needs for growth. Here is an easy schedule to follow:

- Bermuda and Zoysia: Fertilize in late spring (April–May) after the grass begins to become green, and again in mid-summer (July).

- Fescue: Fertilize in early fall (September–October), and again in late winter (February–March).

Remember, over-fertilizing may harm your lawn, so follow the recommended application rates.

4. Control Weeds and Pests

Weeds and pests can be tough to manage, but there are ways to prevent them! Use a pre-emergent weed control product in early spring to prevent weeds like crabgrass from growing. For all existing weeds, treat them with a post-emergent herbicide.

Insect control is equally important, especially during summer when pests are more active. Treating your lawn with insecticide in late spring or early summer can prevent damage before it starts.

5. Overseed Bare Patches

If your lawn has bald spots, overseeding is an effective way to fill them in. Fall is the best time to overseed cool-season grasses like fescue, while spring is the best time to overseed warm-season grasses like Bermuda or Zoysia.

6. Aerate for Healthy Roots

Lawn aeration is an essential part of lawn care that many people overlook. As soil becomes compacted over time, water and nutrients become restricted from reaching the grass roots. Aeration help by creating small holes in the soil to relieve compaction and promote root growth.

In Georgia, aerating your lawn once a year is recommended, preferably in late spring or early fall when the grass is actively growing. This ensures your lawn receives optimal access to nutrients and water.
